Within sight of Bakers Yard is the landmark Croke Park stadium. Without doubt one of the finest arenas
in Europe, Croke Park is famed not only for the range of sporting events it hosts throughout the
year, but also for the selection of concerts which take place each summer from within its hallowed
stands. Internationally renowned artists such as U2, Bon Jovi and The Police, have played here to capacity crowds in recent years. While being within walking distance of the City Centre, Bakers Yard enjoys the benefits of a range of local shops on nearby Dorset Street and Drumcondra Road meaning one never has to travel far for the simple things - a loaf of bread; a coffee and a newspaper or simply a bite to eat from your favourite local pub or restaurant. Bakers Yard enjoys proximity to some delightful open areas, places to while away a pleasant Summers Day. These include Mountjoy Square, Fairview Park, Griffith Park and the Botanic Gardens. The IFSC, one of the economic success stories of the recent past is within easy walking distance of Bakers Yard.
There are currently almost 11,000 people working within the IFSC, a figure that is predicted to grow by 1,000 this year. Of the 430 plus international operations within the IFSC over half of the worlds top 50 banks and the same percentage of the worlds top 20 insurance companies operate from the IFSC. Just beyond the IFSC, Spencer Dock, which is currently under construction is to house the National Conference Centre. At almost a half million square feet, the National Conference Centre is one of the largest single buildings ever constructed in the country. Construction of the NCC is to create roughly 1,000 jobs and when complete it will create 250 full time and 300 part time jobs. The first conference has already been booked in for 2011 and construction is scheduled to complete in 2010.
There are numerous other very large centres of employment in the immediate locality including the Mater Hospital, which has a staff of over 3,000 nurses. There is also a selection of educational institutions locally including DIT's at Bolton Street, Mountjoy Square, Cathal Brugha Street and Portland Row as well as the National College of Ireland IFSC, Holy Cross College, DCU and Clonliffe College. All of the best that the capital has to offer in shopping destinations is close to hand for the Bakers Yard resident. Jervis Centre and the recently revamped ILAC Centre are both within walking distance. Following an extensive rejuvenation programme, O'Connell Street has at long last reclaimed its throne as the Capital's finest thoroughfare.
